Wheelchair
power assist.

A modular attachment designed to help manual-wheelchair users travel on level ground and inclines.

The team’s goal

We’re developing a power-assist attachment for a manual wheelchair, bringing together motor assistance, sensing, control, and a compact mechanical interface. The design aims to support users while preserving the practical benefits of a manual chair.

My focus

My assigned area is motors and sensors. That includes component selection and the bill of materials, drivetrain integration, and a secure mounting approach that fits within the attachment’s size constraints. Motor-load validation is part of the planned development work.

What I’m working through now

I’m evaluating motor and gear-reduction options against torque, size, weight, and cost. A central tradeoff is how to provide useful assistance while allowing comfortable manual coasting. That also affects the team’s approach to downhill energy recovery.

01

Define the requirements

Translate the team’s mobility goals and advisor feedback into motor, sensor, power, and mounting requirements.

02

Compare the drivetrain options

Research brushless motors, geared hubs, and reduction approaches, balancing assistance torque with packaging and manual movement.

03

Plan the prototype validation

Prepare for motor-load checks, drivetrain integration, and controlled incline testing as the prototype develops.

Proposed system

Connecting sensing to assistance.

01

Sense

Inputs for assistance and obstacle awareness

02

Control

Adaptive assistance and speed limiting

03

Assist

Motor, drivetrain, and wheelchair attachment

Adaptive assistance, collision avoidance, and downhill energy recovery are proposed features under development. The team’s incline target and performance still need to be validated through prototype testing.
